Every year at Christmastime
Mom would decorate our tree
With candy canes both large and small;
It was such a sight to see.
And then she would tell the story
All about the candy cane,
The legend how it came to be
She'd then begin to explain.
"There once was a candy maker
Who wanted something to be
A witness during Christmastime
To symbolize Christ's story.
"Christ's purity is seen in white,
A child born of virgin birth.
The stripes of red," my mama said,
"Tell of Christ's suff'ring on earth."
She'd hold the candy cane in hand,
And the letter "J" we'd see.
"'J' is for Jesus," she would say,
"Born our dear Savior to be."
Then she showed us a shepherd's staff
And explained to us that day,
That Jesus was the Good Shepherd
To guide and show us the way.
She said, "The cane is rock solid;
A firm foundation to stand,
Jesus is the Rock of Ages
In a stormy, weary land.
The candy cane told the story
Of a Savior's love for me,
A symbol of His life and love
That I could plainly see.
And every time I see one
I'm reminded of the way
That mama would tell the story
Of the meaning of Christmas day.
