The lowly shepherd sat so still
Watching o'er his flock by night.
The velvet sky was filled with stars,
Painting a glorious sight.
Nestled closely in loving arms,
His sweet lamb quietly lay
While the shepherd sang so softly,
Gently stroking him that day.
The stillness of the starlit night
So inspired his heart to sing,
"O little lamb of God's delight
Everlasting joy you bring.
"And one day you will give your all,
A sacrifice you will be.
O perfect lamb, one day you'll die
And you'll give your life for me."
Then all at once an angel came,
And he said, "Good news I bring.
For unto you in Bethlehem
Is born Christ the Lord and King.
"Go now and see this little child
Lying in a cattle stall.
Go quickly, son, to see the one
Who is born the Lord of all."
Gently carrying his lamb in arms,
His heart overflowed with joy.
He knelt before the infant child,
God's heaven-sent baby boy.
He gave his precious little lamb
As a gift to Christ the King.
And the peace of this holy night
Then inspired his heart to sing.
"O little Lamb of God's delight,
Everlasting joy You'll bring,
You'll one day freely give Your life
As God's perfect offering.
"O little Lamb of God's delight,
I now worship You today
As King of Kings and Lord of Lords,
Heaven's Light to show the way."
