A MINISTRY OF KINDNESS

The poor man walked along his way
And everywhere he went,
He smiled and found kind words to say
To offer encouragement.

One day a heart so burdened
Just happened to pass his way.
Bent over, she walked so slowly
From the cares she bore that day.

Her eyes mirrored her wounded heart
And reflected pools of pain,
While each slow step moved her onward
Leaning on her crooked cane.

She wore an antique eyelet dress
That quickly caught his eye,
And he said, "You look so lovely"
As she slowly passed him by.

She paused beside this gentle man,
And she said, "Thank you, dear sir."
She looked into the kindly eyes
Of the one who'd noticed her.

He said, "I've never seen a dress
Quite as lovely as you wear,"
And her countenance quickly transformed
To a smile from deep despair.

She held onto his treasured words
And her steps began to dance.
A sparkle returned to her eyes
And she walked with eloquence.

Now everyone who passed his way
Would receive a treasure there,
For he offered encouragement
And kind words with them he'd share.

We may not have the gift of gold,
Yet we have a gift to bring,
For words of kindness will uplift
And cause a heart to sing.

A ministry of true kindness
Is one we all can share,
Off'ring words of encouragement
To people ev'rywhere.
